Wallpapering in Ellesmere Port, hung straight and matched with care

A feature wall, one room or a whole house. We're a family run, fully insured decorating team with 15 years in the trade, and we give a free quote with a fixed price for most jobs.

When wallpaper is the right choice

Paint is great for a clean, simple finish, but wallpaper can do things paint can't. A bold pattern brings a plain room to life. A textured paper adds warmth and depth. A heavier lining paper can hide small dents and hairline cracks that would show through emulsion.

People usually call us about wallpapering when they want a feature wall behind a bed or sofa, when they're redecorating a whole room and want something with more character, or when old paper is tired, peeling or simply not to their taste any more. Businesses use it too, for reception areas, restaurants and offices that need a stronger look.

How wallpapering is done properly

A good result comes down to preparation and patience. The paper is only as good as the wall underneath it. Here's how the job generally goes.

Stripping and preparing the walls

Old paper usually needs to come off first, often with a steamer. The walls are then filled, sanded smooth and checked for damp or loose plaster. New or very porous plaster is normally sealed so the paste grips evenly and the paper can be moved into place.

Lining paper where it helps

On uneven or patched walls, a layer of lining paper is often hung first, usually running the opposite way to the finish paper. It gives a smoother base and helps heavier papers sit flat.

Measuring, matching and hanging

Each drop is measured and cut with the pattern lined up from one length to the next. Depending on the paper, paste goes on the wall or the paper. Lengths are hung to a true vertical line rather than the corner of the room, since few walls are perfectly straight.

Trimming and finishing

Edges are trimmed cleanly at ceilings, skirting boards and around sockets and switches. Air bubbles are smoothed out, seams are rolled flat and any paste is wiped off before it dries.

Choosing your paper

It's worth buying all your rolls at once and checking they share the same batch number, as colours can vary slightly between batches. Large patterns also need more paper to match, so allow a little extra. If you're unsure how much to order, ask us when we come to quote.

Questions

Wallpapering questions

Can't see what you need to know? Send us a message and we'll get back to you.

Ask us a question
Do I need to remove old wallpaper before hanging new?

In almost every case, yes. Hanging over old paper risks bubbles, poor adhesion and the old layer lifting later. We strip it, then fill and smooth the walls so the new paper sits flat.

Do I supply the wallpaper or do you?

Most people choose and buy their own paper so they get exactly the design they want. Buy all the rolls at once and check the batch numbers match. We're happy to help you work out how many rolls you need when we quote.

What is lining paper and do I need it?

Lining paper is a plain paper hung before the finish paper. It smooths out minor dents and cracks and gives heavier papers a better base. Whether you need it depends on the state of your walls, which we'll check when we come to look.

Can you hang wallpaper in the evenings or at weekends?

Yes. We work evenings and weekends, which helps if you're busy during the week or if you run a business that can't close.

How much does wallpapering cost?

It depends on the size of the room, the condition of the walls and the type of paper. Quotes are free, and most jobs come with a fixed price, so there are no surprises.

Do you wallpaper for businesses and landlords?

Yes. We decorate for homeowners, landlords, letting agents, businesses, schools, councils and charities, from a single feature wall to larger jobs.
